oh so far

I need to take a minute for a Matthew update. I'd have previously titled something like this post an "OT update" but we no longer need therapy. We are no longer bound by chains that bind us.... we've made such progress. We still have a long way to go. There are still tears and trials, but my we've made such progress...

If someone looked at Matthew today… and saw him eating pepperoni and sausage pizza with carrots in ranch and with strawberry cheesecake pie for dessert… that person would never believe that two years ago… he was only eating bacon and croutons and granola bars each and every day for each and every meal.   We no longer bring “Matthew’s food” with us when we go places.  We know we can order chicken nuggets or fingers wherever we go. We know we can find potatoes or fries most any place.  We know that he’ll at least TRY something because we’ve established good habits.

I am not sure I can even list all the new foods that Matthew can eat at this point. He’s come so so far. So far.
We’ve started something a while back called “Try it Tuesday” and the kids (both Mark and Matthew) understand that we’re going to try something new and you can get your “own” food when you’ve tried it.  Gagging doesn’t get you out of trying it. You get to try another bite.  Matthew has become a pro at this. He doesn’t like it. But we’ve past by the crying, gagging, whining about it for the most part.  On some past Try it Tuesdays, he’s tried grits (we’ve done that a couple times actually, be/c breakfast is a fun dinner), we’ve tried different kinds of pasta dinners, chicken cooked with rice, Chinese fried rice and chicken, or it might be a new vegetable, etc…   he doesn’t have to eat the whole plate… just one bite. And we’re learning what he likes and what he doesn’t like this way. It’s been a good adventure.  And my favorite and best part of dinner is when I don’t have to make multiple meals… we can all eat pancakes, eggs and bacon. we can all eat spaghetti and crescent rolls. we can all eat paprika chicken with corn and potatoes. THIS has been the most rewarding part—making our dinners a happy time without challenge or fuss. He can eat spaghetti without too much trouble. Still doesn’t like mac and cheese, but okay. He can eat almonds, peanuts, pecans, walnuts… He can eat a strawberry or two without moaning. He still shakes when he eats blueberries but I think that’s just a game at this point now. He can eat about five blueberries. Main fruits are still grapes, apples and bananas. He’s okay with pears and melon but doesn’t prefer them. Same for mandarin orange slices.   He can eat a bite of lettuce (one leaf) dipped in ranch – that’s actually our next project to see if we can build him up to three bites and then five and then a small salad!  We’re still only at one bite of peas and one green bean at a time, but that’s something. He does fine with corn. He also doesn’t like cooked carrot—again mushy—but does great with raw.  He eats cornbread, rolls, biscuits, muffins. He eats cheese… he even ate a grilled cheese about two weeks ago for the first time!!! He is more willing to try foods now. It’s amazing. It's just amazing. Matthew has come so far. oh so far.

Thank you Lord Jesus, for bringing Matthew -- and all of us-- out of the bondage we were in because of food. Thank you for rescuing us from that place of hard ache and torture. Thank you for growing us all. Thank you for the trials Lord, and for bringing us to the new morning through the storm.

This morning, Matthew was singing "Oh no You never let go, through the calm and through the storm. Oh no You never let go in every high and every low. Oh no You never let go!"  .... How true that is. How blessed we are. What a peace You Oh Lord have given us that we've come oh so far.

Strawberry cheesecake pie

Last night I put some of our precious picked strawberries to work and made a new recipe. It's a two layer pie. Homemade cheesecake on the bottom and then a strawberry jello glaze on the top. I made my own crust from scratch, first time ever! It was awesome. And then I made this luscious pie from freshly picked berries... oh goodness! It was awesome. Jamie and I had a piece last night after we waited and waited for it to be cooled down...

....the best compliment of all, Matthew trying a piece (for breakfast)!

strawberries (and blueberries) 2012

One of my most favorite things to do that we've turned into a tradition each year now, is to go pick our own strawberries.  Each year we've been going to a little strawberry farm pretty close by... This year, we got all dressed up (I've learned you really need to wear red when you're picking strawberries), and talked it up, and drove to ... a closed field-- closed for the season. Oh it was so sad! Oh the pouting in the back seat. Oh the whining. So, we looked up where there was still a place open with berries and went out the next day. We drove out with friends Nancy and Jonathan--who we've converted into berry pickers! Well, not only did this place have strawberries, they also had blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and onions. You could pick your own onions. It was a very cool place! I would have liked to have picked some blackberries but we were worn out after filling FIVE buckets of strawberries and TWO buckets of blueberries. I took four of the strawberry buckets home (three to keep and one to pass to Jamie's mom) and one bucket of blueberries. Nancy took home one of each bucket.

I'll tell you, there is just something empowering about picking your own fruit. It is hard work. It is hot work. We were all sweating. A lot. But it is so very rewarding. As the kids tend to go off further and faster down their rows than I do, I found myself alone, watching the kids at one point, I had backed up and started down a second row where I spotted "better" berries... I found myself just thanking God and praising God and praying aloud quietly for the beauty around me, for His blessings He alone gives, for His protection, for the children He's gifted me with, for life, for love, for peace.... It was such a sweet time.  Then, when we were picking berries, it was neat, Nancy and I were talking about Ruth from the Bible... how we were actually picking the first fruits of those blueberries because many weren't even ripe yet, and you had to work hard to find the blue ones, and how Ruth would have been walking like we were, but taking what was left over. It was interesting. It was just a good day.

I've already washed and handled the fruit. A gallon bucket of blueberries is a LOT!  We'll have "fresh" blueberry pancakes for many weekends in a row! And let me tell you-- three buckets of strawberries... I can't wait to make some jam! I have a big container of crushed berries ready to go. I am sure there will be strawberry cupcakes in my kids' future too. ha ha.

Oh and one random funny--- I didn't realize until just now looking back at last year's strawberry picking pictures... that Mark has on the SAME exact outfit-- same hat and all. Yes, he hasn't changed clothing size in OVER a year. He's still in 24 month clothes. See?

Thanks Nancy for going with us (and driving)! I'm so glad we've got this tradition to do each year together!

Baseball

My previous entry was about how the "year end" things were happening, and here's another one. This year's baseball season is over for the Mighty Matthew! He sure had fun playing. And you know what? We all, I think, had fun going to see him play. I will admit having some frustrations -- but isn't that the case, when you're watching something, you can always think of 100 ways it is wrong and should be better. At the end of the day, what mattered though was that Matthew was enjoying himself. He told me more than once that "baseball days" were his favorite ones. This is worthwhile!  Here's just a few thoughts about the season, and then you can view it.

1. Matthew typically had his tongue sticking out while he ran the bases.
    He was concentrating hard!
2. Matthew always always slid into home base. Always.
And he was so proud of himself for doing so.
3. Matthew picked his own bright orange helmet.
You know what? He was so easy to spot sitting on that bench though, because of it!
4. Having grandparents present at events, makes those events better.
5. Having friends come cheer your kid on, is awesome.
6. Mark pretty much concluded that baseball games = snack time.
    9am, 6pm, what's the difference, "can I have a snack?"
7. Matthew made us proud!
What a great introduction to the wide wide world of SPORTS!
