Strawberry cheesecake pie

Last night I put some of our precious picked strawberries to work and made a new recipe. It's a two layer pie. Homemade cheesecake on the bottom and then a strawberry jello glaze on the top. I made my own crust from scratch, first time ever! It was awesome. And then I made this luscious pie from freshly picked berries... oh goodness! It was awesome. Jamie and I had a piece last night after we waited and waited for it to be cooled down...

....the best compliment of all, Matthew trying a piece (for breakfast)!

strawberries (and blueberries) 2012

One of my most favorite things to do that we've turned into a tradition each year now, is to go pick our own strawberries.  Each year we've been going to a little strawberry farm pretty close by... This year, we got all dressed up (I've learned you really need to wear red when you're picking strawberries), and talked it up, and drove to ... a closed field-- closed for the season. Oh it was so sad! Oh the pouting in the back seat. Oh the whining. So, we looked up where there was still a place open with berries and went out the next day. We drove out with friends Nancy and Jonathan--who we've converted into berry pickers! Well, not only did this place have strawberries, they also had blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and onions. You could pick your own onions. It was a very cool place! I would have liked to have picked some blackberries but we were worn out after filling FIVE buckets of strawberries and TWO buckets of blueberries. I took four of the strawberry buckets home (three to keep and one to pass to Jamie's mom) and one bucket of blueberries. Nancy took home one of each bucket.

I'll tell you, there is just something empowering about picking your own fruit. It is hard work. It is hot work. We were all sweating. A lot. But it is so very rewarding. As the kids tend to go off further and faster down their rows than I do, I found myself alone, watching the kids at one point, I had backed up and started down a second row where I spotted "better" berries... I found myself just thanking God and praising God and praying aloud quietly for the beauty around me, for His blessings He alone gives, for His protection, for the children He's gifted me with, for life, for love, for peace.... It was such a sweet time.  Then, when we were picking berries, it was neat, Nancy and I were talking about Ruth from the Bible... how we were actually picking the first fruits of those blueberries because many weren't even ripe yet, and you had to work hard to find the blue ones, and how Ruth would have been walking like we were, but taking what was left over. It was interesting. It was just a good day.

I've already washed and handled the fruit. A gallon bucket of blueberries is a LOT!  We'll have "fresh" blueberry pancakes for many weekends in a row! And let me tell you-- three buckets of strawberries... I can't wait to make some jam! I have a big container of crushed berries ready to go. I am sure there will be strawberry cupcakes in my kids' future too. ha ha.

Oh and one random funny--- I didn't realize until just now looking back at last year's strawberry picking pictures... that Mark has on the SAME exact outfit-- same hat and all. Yes, he hasn't changed clothing size in OVER a year. He's still in 24 month clothes. See?

Thanks Nancy for going with us (and driving)! I'm so glad we've got this tradition to do each year together!

Strawberies 2011 take two

We went strawberry picking for the second time of the season today. Man it is HARDER if you wait this long to go. The berries are scarce. But we had a good time and went with friends Nancy and her son Jonathan. It was Jonathan's first berry picking adventure and he did great. Matthew wasn't so into it this time, since you had to do more hunting for those berries. Mark.... well you know Mark, he was all about eating all of the ones he could find. Oh and Micah slept through this adventure. I was able to get enough strawberries today to make another batch of jam later in the year!

strawberries 2011

This is our third year in a row to go strawberry picking. This year my dear friend Nancy joined us. She kept Micah calm, asleep and on her while Matthew and Mark picked with me. Matthew did a really good job, nearly filling up his own bucket. Mark... not so much. He truly enjoys just eating them. I had to give him "one more last one" about 15 times. But we had a good time. They had a nice time and I enjoy gathering our own food. So far we made a strawberry cobbler that was a flop, strawberry cupcakes that were awesome, we've frozen some for smoothie making later and we have been working on a large tub just to eat. I'm super excited about making JAM this coming Thursday with a friend and hope we still have enough strawberries to do that or I may need to go pick some more!

first picking adventure of the season

Today we picked our first two buckets of strawberries for the season. I love picking our own fruit. It's so rewarding. But it is also WORK. Oh my. I went with my friend Tricia... who has five kiddos, so between us we had 7 kids trying to pick two buckets for each family... Matthew wasn't as interested in picking this year. He wanted to play in the dirt or look at the bugs or walk down the aisle as far as he could before I noticed, passing by all these big juicy red berries!!! He picked about 10-15 himself maybe. Last year he basically filled the whole bucket himself. Oh well. We'll try again. Mark was very different this year. Last year slept both times we picked. Yah, um. not so much. And the stroller doesn't go down the aisle, not even the umbrella stroller, so hi. I was either holding him on my hip (not great for bending and picking berries) or I had him slung over halfway on my back (not great for the PAIN in my thighs and calves) or he was crying in front of me. If I plopped his bottom down in the dirt and hand him a berry to eat, he was fine. Happy. Clapping with his berries. If he didn't have the tasty fruit, he was crying/fussing/grabbing for me. Picking berries with a 20 pound leech is difficult. Picking berries with a 3 year old that "just doesn't feel like it" is annoying! BUT... the fruits of my labor (literally) are worth it!

And enjoying the sampling.

And helping himself
